Premier Theater Foxwoods

Tom Jones and his band played a sold out show at Foxwoods Premier Theater on April 18, 2025. This was the second show of his Defy Expectations 2025 tour. This is an aptly named tour for the man continues to defy and exceed all expectations. The fact that he is still going so amazingly strong after 6 decades is just incredible.

Jones began the set in an intimate simple way as he walked out on stage and joined the keyboard player with a spot lighting up each as he began the concert with his song “I’m Growing Old” off his acclaimed 2021 album “Surrounded by Time,” which topped out at number one in the UK when it was released. He told us proudly he was the oldest man to have a number one album in the UK. He may have aged but his voice has not changed and is one of the most world’s most recognizable singers for that voice.

Prior to many of his songs Jones gave a short explanation of why he chose the song and the backstory on his mindset when he released the song. In his six decades of performing he’s had numerous hits and accolades. He was knighted by Her Magesty the Queen in 2006, which he said is one of his greatest honors. I imagine the short explanations we got can in no way compare to the mountain of stories he could tell of the things he has done in his life.

Jones began hitting it big in his career when his song “It’s Not Unusual,” released in 1965, broke out and went to number 1 in the UK and Top 10 in America. Since then he has had 19 Top 40 singles in the US and more in the UK. I think no Tom Jones concert would be complete without this staple from his stable of hits.

He sang “This Is The Sea” which showcases the blues that he’s said he enjoys branching out to sing on occasion. This was a wonderful rendition and showed his range not only in songs but genres. It was a great addition to an already great setlist.

Tom Jones has sang with many of the greats over the years. He summed it up in “One Hell Of A Life.” That is absolutely something this man has had. He has consistently performed with his baritone voice booming out. He sounds as strong as he did on previous occasions when I’ve seen him perform.

I think the entire audience agreed he is a legend and there will never be another like him as they stood and gave ovations to Sir Tom Jones in appreciation all he has done to enrich our lives. Everyone has a favorite Tom Jones song from “It’s Not Unusual” and “Delilah” or “Sex Bomb” to his later songs like “Kiss,” his fantastic take on Prince’s song which gave a whole other generation a chance to enjoy his music. Or, something off his newest album “Surrounded By Time.”

I don’t know if I will get the opportunity to see him again, I hope so. But, if not I’m so glad for this evening and seeing one of the great singers of so many generations stand and sing so strongly. To be a man who began in Wales, UK as a teenager singing at local clubs he has left his indelible mark on the world with his gift of song he has shared with us.
