The first half of the show Charo was the legendary Charo everyone expects. She was funny, vivacious, and energetic. She threw out witty comments about how she is viewed by others in between songs. Talking about and using her signature phrase “Cuchi-cuchi.” At one point she laughed and said that people ask “How old is that Bitch. I saw her 250 years ago.” She got a great laugh from the audience at that one.
Charo uses her comedy in her heavy Spanish accent in between songs. But don’t underestimate her, she knew from an early age how to keep an audience engaged. This has contributed to her staying power in an extremely competitive business and is part of why her career has spanned decades.
She brings the audience into her show by coming out into the crowd and forming a samba line that circled through the theater, she would stop and personally greet members of the audience. Charo is so personable it is impossible not to like her.
During the show one fan approached the stage and presented the surprised and appreciative Charo with roses which she thanked him for and held as she sang the next song.
The second half of the show she got serious. Picked up her flamenco guitar, sat down on a stool and schooled everyone who ever doubted her talents to what an excellent flamenco guitarist she is. Learning the guitar at an early age she auditioned for a spot in guitarist Andrés Segovia’s music school. She was accepted and that was the beginning of a lifelong career in entertainment. One of her guitar albums “Guitar Passion” made it to No. 21 on Billboard’s charts in 1994.
It was an entertaining night given by an excellent performer. Charo is all encompassing. She is a singer, comedian, actress and serious flamenco guitar player. I am not sure how many more years she can keep up this energetic pace, but it was a pleasure to see her and would do it again.
