The Atlantis Rising International Sand Sculpture Competition took place Friday through Monday at Misquamicut Beach in Westerly.
1st place: “Balance” by Melineige Beauregard of Canada
2nd place: “The Octophant of Atlantis” by Susanne Ruseler of The Netherlands
“The Winds of Change” by Martijn Rijerse of Holland.
The People’s Choice winner was “Illusional Pinocchio” by John Gowdy
Tuesday ten artists started their sand sculptures and had until noon on Saturday to finish. The total time they have to work on their sculptures is 40 hours but was extended slightly due to weather that went throught on Wednesday evening. Judges will announce their choice for the winner of the competition that evening.
The winner of the public’s favorite will receive $2,500 and the winner of the judges’ choice will receive $7,500. It is possible that an artist could win both prizes.
This show is a great addition to the fall Misquamicut Beach lineup of events. If you get the chance do go and see the show in 2023 when The Atlantis Rising International Sand Sculpture Competition returns for another year of fun and see what new ideas the artists complete from sand.
